Historical Background & Origin
The herbaceous plant originally comes from South America and with the increase in awareness and commercial use of stevia, the cultivation area of the plant, which is also known as honey herb, sweet herb or sweet leaf, has expanded and the sweetener is now used worldwide. It is not only cultivated in numerous South American countries, but also in China, the USA and Thailand.
Sweetening power
One of the greatest benefits of stevia is its great sweetening power. This sweetening power comes from the aforementioned plant constituents steviol glycosides, also known as steviosides.Steviosides are three hundred times sweeter than the refined sugar sucrose. Even the smallest amounts of stevia are therefore completely sufficient to replace crystalline sugar on a large scale.
