Historical Background & Origin
Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a botanical species belonging to the soapberry family, predominantly indigenous to the Amazon basin where it thrives by climbing on neighboring trees. When cultivated, guarana typically assumes a shrub-like growth pattern.
The formal designation "guarana" (paullinia cupana) originates from the Guaraní people, an indigenous group native to regions of Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Throughout their ancestral South American practices, guarana has been esteemed as a significant botanical remedy for centuries.
Caffeine Source
The seeds of guarana are not only abundant in fats, proteins, and starch, but also boast a notably high caffeine content - typically three to five times greater than that found in an equivalent quantity of coffee beans. The caffeine remains active in the body for a duration of four to six hours, exerting its stimulating effects over a similar timeframe.
GUARANA
It is worth noting that the plant itself is not utilized for further processing into capsules, powders, or teas. Rather, it is the small, red fruits housing the prized seeds, also known as nuts, within. Upon ripening, the fruit splits open to reveal its white interior containing the black seeds, whose beneficial properties are harnessed in guarana-infused products. Following drying, the seeds are ground into a fine powder or combined with other ingredients to form a paste. Guarana is characterized by its bitter taste.
