Historical Background & Origin
Alchemilla is an old women's medicinal herb. The common lady's mantle belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae), and the lacy lady's mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) is mainly used as a medicinal plant.The plant is found in North America, Greenland and northern Europe as well as in the high altitudes of Asia. It can reproduce without seeds, vegetatively, unisexually.
The medicinal plant
The medicinally used part of lady's mantle is its herb (which includes leaves, flowers and stems). In medical and pharmaceutical terminology, this is referred to as Alchemillae herba. Lady's mantle contains various medicinal and active ingredients that make it a versatile medicinal plant. In addition to flavonoids, saponins and bitter substances, lady's mantle also contains traces of salicylic acid and is particularly rich in tannins.
